Discolouration of the nail plate is becoming increasingly more common. Infection can be picked up anywhere, such as swimming pools, spas, shared bathroom facilities, the use of unsterilised instruments to cut nails etc. It results in a long term, difficult to treat condition of the nail plate that is unsightly and can become painful as the nail plate thickens.

The nail usually begins to discolour from the free edge and lines of brown or yellow streak towards the nail base. As time progresses, the nail becomes thick and crumbles easily when filed or cut. Sometimes a mal odour results. As the fungus reaches the nail base, the shape of the nail becomes distorted and may in grow.

It is certainly not life threatening but it can be very demoralising to see these disfigured, discoloured nails on the feet.

There are a number of products that have been around for a very long time but there is no one product that can treat every nail satisfactorily. Some are obtained on a prescription such as Lamisil and comes in the form of either oral tablets or an ointment.

Others can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies such as Daktarin Tincture. This comes in a pot with a nail brush and is very easily applied to the affected nails. It costs about $15. Daily application is required and a weekly removal of the layer of base from the nail is also necessary.

There have been a number of natural products on the market both affordable and unaffordable.

Phytonail has been used overseas for years and has recently been imported to Australia. It has been used for discoloured nails with great success and a number of research papers are available discussing the advantages and success of this product.

I have been impressed with a noticeable difference in the nail plate within only 8 weeks in my patients so would like to personally recommend Phytonail to try if you have this common problem. It is available through podiatrists only at the moment and Instep Podiatry has stock in hand now for your immediate purchase.

It comes in the shape of a fibre pen that is uncapped and then used straight onto the nail plate. It dries in a minute and is invisible.

If you wish to discuss this or any other podiatric problem, call Craig on 3855 2877 at Instep Podiatry 7/12 Blackwood Street Mitchelton.
